Autumn in the Chemung Valley is among the most beautiful in the country. While life-long residents of the area are already pros at autumn driving through Elmira, tips and tricks for a better driving experience are never a bad thing! Whether a resident or a visitor, consider the following strategies when driving around Elmira in the fall months.
Watch for deer
- Autumn time comes with a lot of changes in the Chemung Valley; perhaps the most important change is the increased activity that the area sees in the local deer population. With many deer reaching maturity and all deer bulking up for winter, many drivers will see more deer along roadways and especially highways. Deer are most active at dusk and dawn, meaning that drivers should stay particularly vigilant to avoid collisions with the creatures.
Be cautious of fog
- Similar to the increased danger of deer on area thoroughfares, fog becomes a nuisance during the fall months as well. While many fall days see fog at the beginning and clear skies later in the day, misty rains can simulate foggy driving conditions. Be sure to check your vehicle’s fog lights regularly, but especially as autumn moves into the Elmira area.
Be prepared for driving in lower-light
- Weather and wildlife conditions aside, fewer daylight hours mean more hours driving in low-light conditions. As the days shorten, dusk and dawn fall closer onto commuting hours. Combined with the threat of fog and wildlife accidents, it is vital to assure that your headlights are functioning and that any prescription eye lenses are up to date in preparation for driving in the fall.
Look out for back-to-school traffic
- With schools back in session, it’s important to be aware of children crossing the street during the morning and afternoon. Additionally, area colleges will add cars to the road on routes that may otherwise be less populous during the summer months. While most drivers are aware of and prepared for the additional traffic, less experienced drivers may find themselves unprepared for the added road strain as autumn moves in.
Enjoy the view
- The southern tier is among the most beautiful places in the country for autumn viewing, enjoy it! While nearly any vantage point from area roads will provide stunning shades of red and orange, consider visiting the Harris Hill Overlook just outside of Big Flats right off of Route 17. If you find yourself with a free weekend, consider driving portions of Route 17 to enjoy the fall scenes, and if you know of any backroad ways through the Elmira area, share it with your friends!
Autumn is a stunning time of change across Chemung county. It’s important to appreciate and enjoy the natural beauty that Elmira provides us, but equally as important to take care to ensure that you’re driving as well as you can as the days get shorter and the wildlife become more active. Check your car’s lights and your own eyes before you head out on the road, and make the most of the coming fall months!
