Car Accidents Are More Frequent In Summertime
Why are there more accidents during warmer months?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration most auto accidents occur during the month of August. The next busiest months are September and July. To me it would seem logical that there would be more car accidents in the winter months, with all the ice, snow and other hazardous conditions. But the more I look at it, the more it makes sense that the summertime poses the biggest challenge to our driving.
In my insurance agency I am involved in assisting clients with their claim each and every day. I am always hopeful that there are no serious injuries when I first talk to a client who just suffered an accident. It just seems fascinating to me the number of accidents that occur. So I started to compose a list as to WHY there are so many fender-benders and bang-ups during the summer months.
Here's 6 Reasons why:
- More cars are on the road. In the summer months there is simply more traffic. Vacationers, local congestion and the little old lady who only seems to come out during the nice weather.
- More road construction. Potholes are being filled, entire lanes are shut down for repair, and new expansion and shoulder work is being performed.
- Distractions like texting, calling, eating and scanning the radio are taking away the focus of the driver. There's so much to pay attention to while driving that one small distraction is all it takes to not avoid an accident.
- People drive faster in Summertime. In winter there can be more challenging road conditions - like ice and snow - which forces most cars to drive slower and with care. In summer cars tend to go faster and even exceed the posted speed limit in many cases.
- Deer and other animals are all over. We often think deer come out only in the Fall, but they are just as common in the summer, especially at dusk.
- Alcohol. More drivers, more cars means more alcohol related accidents.
